EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) means the automatic sending and receiving of business documents between companies electronically. Instead of paper documents (e.g. purchase orders, invoices, delivery notes), companies send data via computer systems – quickly, securely and without the errors caused by manual input.

EDI is used in many industries where there is a lot of document exchange between companies. It is most commonly used in:

  • Retail and wholesale – e.g. for orders, delivery notes and invoices
  • Automotive – to coordinate production and deliveries
